Well, It *IS* A Monday

I started my day off so very wrong just now. I accidentally watched a man get his arm ripped off by an alligator. Well, a video of such, anyway.

I saw the video on someone's blog and thought I'd play it, assuming the man would just get a close call, much like I'm used to with America's Funniest Home Videos or that one show on Spike TV. Yeah, this wasn't like that - it showed the whole thing, up-close, full-on terrifying.  Thank GOD my speakers weren't plugged in. And I didn't get the chance to stop it because it was so short my brain didn't register the holy shit factor until it was over and I was left staring at a black screen.

this is meI used to watch Faces of Death videos when I was a teen. I didn't care - it garnered "ewww" and "oh my god" but it was still watchable.  Not anymore. Not even close.  I refuse to watch even the Spike show where there are painful close calls because ouch! and that so could have been me!  I can't visit websites that show dead or injured people. I can't watch any 'extreme' shows. I can't even watch the emergency room dramas. I simply can't handle that anymore.  Honestly, even when someone gets hurt on Funniest Home Videos, I cringe and feel like someone is stabbing me in the stomach.

What is that? Is that age? Maturity? Conscience? Fear of mortality? Sissy-itis?

With the video I just watched, my stomach turned sour and I haven't stopped shaking. My palms are sweaty. I can't get that last scene out of my mind. I'll spare you the details. I seriously need to go watch My Little Pony or something now. Someone hold me.  (Not you, Pappy.)

There there my poor Chasey! **hugs** I freaked when you said "Faces of Death" that was a flashback! My brother used to rent those all the time! But I was too chicken to ever watch them! I still have nightmares about those people jumping off the Twin Towers during the Sept 11 attacks. You ask if it is maturity or other factors that do not allow you to stomach this kind of stuff anymore? I think yes! When we are young nothing like this can happen to us! But as adults we know the reality of situations and the reality of the consequences. Unfortunately, I think the awful world events are also to blame. Terror attacks happen, Tsunamis happen, abducted and murdered children happen and alligator attacks happen. The question is why??? Maybe we have just been too sheltered or have we become careless and naive?

My kid (who is 22) will watch that kind of stuff on occasion...me...I'm getting too old for that to hold my interest. (Yeah...I must have gotten sissified over the years)

I too loved the "Faces of Death" videos, but I was a teenager and had no idea that I was mortal. Today I can't even watch that show on the Discovery (I think) Channel "I Shouldn't be Alive". Its all too much reality for me.

I used to watch Faces of Death too. But I only laughed. It all seemed so unreasonable and implausible. Funny how the fictional accounts freaked me out more than the real stuff. Heh. Where's the link to the video?

I'm 31 and I know exactly what you mean. I use to watch everything and anything I could that was gruesome and horrific. Now, I can't even understand what's funny when someone gets hurt and it's filmed for AFV. I yell at the TV for the idiots to put the camera down and help the individual that was hurt. Maybe it does come with age.

I don't care for that stuff. My mom lost her arm in a farm accident, so it's a little too close to home for me.
Posted by divinecalm at March 27, 2006 12:48 PM

You know what happened to all the ponies, right?
Posted by Chanakin at March 27, 2006 12:49 PM

Ewww! I think it's mortality. We don't feel invincable anymore. I have the "My Little Pony" song in my head now except I don't know the words so I keep singing "My Little Pony" over and over again. Damn you, Chase! (Shaking fist)

Chase, I'll hold you, but no chest nuzzling. I think we all remember what happened last time and if you think it's fun getting paint chips and melted peanut butter cups out of my hair, you're dead wrong. As for the scary stuff, I think it's gotten worse. Faces of Death seemed cheesy, but this new stuff is around because there are readily available video cameras (in phones, even) every where you go. Even right now, as you read this, lustily fingering the Ctrl key, you're being filmed. And someday, that'll end up on the Interwebiversenet. And I will pay $5 to see it and other Bloggers Gone Wild videos.

OMG we used to watch "Faces of Death" at sleepovers in high school!!

Muse - I think you're right. I, too, still have 9-11 jumper nightmares. For some reason, jumping is one of my biggest fears and has been even before 9-11. It scares the crapola outta me. *shudder* Mike - It MUST be an age thing. Though it's not so much that it doesn't hold my interest, but if I see something remotely violent, it makes me want to curl into a little ball. Chicky - I just recently heard about that show and I thought to myself that it was exactly the kind of show I would never watch. Haha!! Yeah, anything like that just gives me the willies. Kevin - Yeah, I remember laughing at the shows, too. I can't imagine doing that now! I guess it had to have been the "I'm above it all" attitude of youth. Yikes. So sad. theMike - I'm right there with ya! How can someone just stand there and film something so crazy? I'd either be hiding my eyes or trying to help in some way. (More likely hiding my eyes, sadly) Clam - oh no! That's horrible. Yeah, I don't blame ya, either, then. Chanakin - GRRRRRRRRRRRR. Deb - You know what? I hadn't even thought about the My Little Pony song until you said it. And I'm the SAME WAY! All I know is "my little pony...la la la" Damn YOU, Deb! Dr.Pants - Sorry about all that last time. We won't discuss that here though. And, as for the cameras, I've TOLD you not to film me in the daytime. Dusk is much more flattering. Geez. J'sMommy - Doesn't it just boggle your mind now?? I just can't fathom thinking that was fun! But I sure did. Haha!!

I went to a blog that had that video too, but luckily, I didn't click on it! I'm very glad!

i was always such a wussy. i couldn't watch those faces of death...and in 1988, those were some hot entertainment!!! didn't some dude on FOD get eaten by a gator too? yuck. ack. im naseous.
Posted by stella at March 27, 2006 03:22 PM

Stella - YES!! That's one of the few clips I actually remember from those videos...the skydiver who landed in the alligator pit. Egads. Maybe I just have a thing with alligators?? Ick.
Posted by Chase at March 27, 2006 04:33 PM

So.....You do get points for changing words. Now we have another one to discuss......*zigh* I'll send you a box of rolie polies - I know that you find them calming.
Posted by Pappy at March 27, 2006 05:48 PM

I am SO glad you did not link the video. I would have tortured myself and watched it. How horrible! That is right up there in squeamish factor with 'eyeball injury' in my book! Did you watch something all pink and fluffy with goodness? Eek. I hope you replace that image in your brain soon! Happy Monday anyway!

You are so not alone with feeling that way. I can actually watch some ER shows on discovery but thats as far as i can go. I watched a few of those faces of death when i was 14 or so and it still grosses me out. I can't watch anything gore. No blood movies, nothing. I watched a viseo a few months ago, it wasnt that bad I a sure but it really bothers me. The ultimate movie I saw online that did me in....Ughh get this..I will nver forget and feel like it warped my inncocent mind. I saw a guy eat some ladies poo. OMGGGG It was a few years ago and I had webtv and i was trying to watch a move and it was so slowwwwww and when i realzized what was happening i wanted to die.
Posted by Chelle at March 28, 2006 08:31 AM

Once a pussy. Always a pussy. Never could watch those FODs, or anything else violent for that matter. Except Kill Bill (both volumes, in fact.) Hmmm...
Posted by Hill at March 28, 2006 08:49 AM

I do apologise for ruining your Monday. I hope you`ve got over the croc episode. I`ll put big warnings up next time ;)
Posted by Paddy at March 28, 2006 09:47 AM

Pappy - it's rather scary what information you know and remember about me. Are you keeping notes? Creep. Or should I say DAMN creep? ;) Ragdoll - you wanna know something even worse? I went back to the site a couple of times and ALMOST clicked on it again. Now tell me, what is THAT?! I think I need help. Haha! Hill - those ARE pretty violent! But I love 'em too. Though, you know those aren't real so it's not that bad. I also liked Sin City, which was one of the most gruesome things EVER. But I didn't mind that one! Paddy - Hahahah!! NO problem! I shoulda known better...I knew it was about stupid humans and crocs. LOL I was just being brave clicking on it - guess that just backfired. hehe!
Posted by Chase at March 28, 2006 10:47 AM

OMG, I totally wrote like I was drunk. Sorry girly :(
Posted by Chelle at March 28, 2006 12:05 PM

Chelle - hahaha!! I just now got to read your first post. For some reason, I didn't get the email saying your post needed moderating. Hmph. But...OH MY GOD. rofl! I would HATE to stumble onto something like that. I'm not sure if I could ever sleep again. Ewwwwww! I guess it takes all kinds. *vomit* However, I'm happy to report that I didn't have a single dream about alligators or people being maimed last night. I guess it helps that I watched 5 episodes of Friends and 3 or 4 episodes of Family Guy before bed. :) Laughter cures all!

Be careful what you tell me. Heck - I even remember your measurements, for cryin' out loud... Well, I kinda do. I just have to remember to multiply the old numbers by 2.5 ;)
